Unlock practice benefits

Groupcare is our practice scheme that offers savings on membership and exclusive benefits for the whole team. It’s free to set-up and when a GP Practice joins, each individual doctor, nurse & practice manager will benefit.

Who can join?

If you're in England or Wales, half or more of the GPs in your practice must be MDU members (exclusions and minimum numbers apply). To unlock all the benefits of Groupcare in England and Wales only, all GPs in your practice must be MDU members.

If you're in Scotland, Ireland or the Channel Islands, two or more GPs in your practice must hold an MDU membership.

For more information on your practice's eligibility, exclusions and what benefits you'll access, speak to your local liaison manager.

If your practice has incorporated, see our corporate solutions for how we can support your business.

Frequently asked questions

Our Groupcare practice is in Scotland/Northern Ireland. Does this mean our practice staff lose their discounted membership benefit?

For Groupcare practices in Scotland, the discount offered to practice staff is 15% on their membership.

In Northern Ireland and the Channel Isles, there is no change to the discount offered to practice staff, as there is no state indemnity scheme in place.

Does the 10% subscription saving apply across the country?

No, the 10% subscription saving applies to NHS primary care work in England and Wales only.

In Scotland, there is a 15% subscription saving that applies. For Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man there is no state-backed indemnity scheme for GPs or practice staff, so there is no change to the individual savings currently offered for some practice staff.

All GPs in our practice are now MDU members and a couple of us are due to renew our subscription next month. How will this change affect us?

GROUPCARE practices with all MDU members can unlock additional benefits such as a 10% subscription saving on individual membership (NHS primary care work in England and Wales only), new and improved in practice seminars and additional online and face to face training. The benefits will apply from the individual’s next renewal after your GROUPCARE scheme has renewed with All GPs as MDU members.

I can’t see healthcare assistants and phlebotomists in my scheme any more (England and Wales), why is that?

The state-backed indemnity scheme will provide support for clinical negligence claims for primary care staff arising from contracted NHS duties in England and Wales. This means healthcare assistants and phlebotomists no longer require membership. Members in these roles can continue until their renewal date, but renewal will not be offered.

Practice managers and GPs can ask for medico-legal advice and support for issues arising from HCAs and phlebotomists through their own membership.

Does our GROUPCARE scheme continue if an MDU GP leaves mid year?

You will continue to enjoy the same benefits until the scheme’s renewal date. If the GP is replaced by another MDU GP, benefits will continue. If not we will calculate the level of benefits you are entitled to.

At the moment less than half of our GPs are MDU members. Does that mean our scheme will close?

Your scheme will continue in force for a grace period in order to give you the chance to convert more of your GPs to MDU membership. Contact your local GP liaison manager to help you to organise this.

I’m a practice manager and a partner at my practice. I’ve been informed that I won’t be entitled to free membership. Why?

If you are a practice manager and a partner you have vicarious liability for your practice staff and you will need to apply for paid individual membership.

Find out more and apply online for membership.

How do I find out what the renewal date of my GROUPCARE scheme?

You can find your GROUPCARE scheme renewal date by logging in to My membership. Your scheme renewal date is shown at the top of the GROUPCARE management screen.

My practice has incorporated. Can we open a Groupcare scheme?

No. Groupcare has been created to support practices that have not incorporated. Practices (and partners) that have incorporated are liable for risks such as performance or conduct of individual staff as well as sub-contractors who don’t usually have their own professional indemnity.

If your corporation has incorporated, we offer corporate solutions to support your business.
