Our affiliate membership is free for GP trainees working in England, offering access to a wide range of educational resources and benefits to support you throughout your training. If you are a GP trainee in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, please refer to GPST membership.

Affiliate membership does not include access to indemnity for claims or medico-legal advice. Where this is not provided by the state, it will be arranged by your local education and training board (LETB) with another provider. Contact your LETB for more information.

Do I get further discounts with Red Whale as an MDU affiliate member?

The Red Whale GP Trainee Essentials package is currently available to GPST 1, 2 and 3s. Members can sign up for the package in each of their training years, so you can continue to benefit from this support package throughout your GP training journey.

To support you in your early career, we're also currently offering an exclusive member benefit to those who take up full MDU membership as a first year GP - one free Red Whale online course of your choice.

If you continue your affiliate membership with the MDU until the end of your GP training, we'll be in touch to let you know more about this close to when you reach your CCT.

How do I access my free Red Whale content?

Approximately six weeks after your affiliate membership is live, you'll receive a unique code by email to get free access to Red Whale GP Trainee Essentials, along with instructions on how to redeem your code and sign up.

Once you’re signed up, simply log in to your account on redwhale.co.uk to get started with your resources. If you don’t already have an account, it’s quick and easy to create one when you sign up for GP Trainee Essentials.

You’ll have access to all 900+ Red Whale articles and GEMS straight away, plus access to upcoming webinars - or on demand access to any that have already taken place.

When will I receive my Red Whale login details?

You’ll set up your Red Whale login details (if you don’t already have an account) when you sign up for the GP Trainee Essentials package.

We’ll send you an email approximately six weeks after joining the MDU for affiliate membership with a unique code for you to sign up for this package for free, along with instructions on how to redeem your code.

How much does affiliate membership cost?

Nothing. Affiliate membership is free for GPSTs working in England.

If I'm an MDU affiliate member, but also have claims support with another provider through my LETB, does that mean I am dual indemnified?

No - because MDU affiliate membership doesn't include indemnity for claims.

What if I'm not working as a GPST anymore?

Talk to our membership team about your working circumstances so we can discuss your indemnity needs and the membership options that suit you.

When can I have full MDU membership?

Once your training is complete and you're about to move into your first GP role, we'll send your renewal documents for your first year as a GP. Don't forget to update us with your CCT date and what you'll be doing for your first post.

First year GP discount

If you're moving into your GPST3 year, you can take advantage of a 70% discount for your membership renewal next year as a first year qualified GP. You will also get a free online course from Red Whale with a value of up to £205.
