This is a full-day in-person course.

This course provides an essential grounding in the key aspects of setting up and running a business and the common pitfalls to look out for. Get insights from a doctor working in private practice and advice from business specialists.

The doctor in private practice:

  • establishing your practice and setting goals and objectives
  • implications your private practice work will have on your NHS commitments
  • patient experience and satisfaction
  • expectations for work-life balance.

Legal and regulatory considerations:

  • professional indemnity
  • GMC perspective
  • CQC registration
  • the Data Protection Act and storage and retention of records
  • appraisal and revalidation
  • terms and conditions of service and code of conduct for private practice. 

Working with private hospitals:

  • what private healthcare providers are looking for
  • engagement models
  • applying for practising privileges
  • medical advisory committee responsibilities.

Acting as an expert witness:

  • duties and benefits of being an expert witness
  • avoiding pitfalls and tips for successful engagements.

Marketing and advertising:

  • setting up an online profile and building your online reputation
  • referral traffic sources.

Financial operations:

  • bookkeeping, invoicing and credit control
  • pricing your services. 

The accountancy perspective:

  • how to set up as a sole trader, limited company or limited partnership
  • tax, NI, PAYE and expenses.

MDU medico-legal adviser

Jerard graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1994. He then moved into surgical training in Edinburgh before completing his M.D. at the University of Manchester. Before joining the MDU he was a consultant in adult and paediatric neurosurgery in Edinburgh where he was the surgeon to the Scottish National Paediatric Epilepsy Programme. He is now the medical education lead and head of Scottish affairs for the MDU.
